Chitakale Tea Estate PDF Print E-mail

The Government of Malawi through The Privatisation Commission recently called for Expressions of Interest in the sale of Chitakale Tea and Coffe Estate Limited with assets in the categories of land and buildings, plantations, equipment and motor vehicles, livestock, furniture and stocks. The process of selecting the preferred bidder is underway.

Chitakale Estate Limited is located near Mulanje Boma, in the Southern region of Malawi and occupies an area of 537 hectares. Its main business activity is the growing, processing and selling of tea. It also used to grow coffee, albeit at a small scale, but this was discontinued due to poor performance on the market. Out of the total area of 537 hectares, 392 hectares is under puckable tea; 35 hectares is arable land, whilst the balance 110 hectares is under blue gum (eucalyptus) fuel wood forest. The area originally under coffee plantations is being replanted with tea and fuel wood plantations. The company maintains a small number of dairy cattle.
