The Government in March 2007 instructed The PC to restart the privatisation of Air Malawi. The PC was mandated to look for a potential private sector operator in the region that would be interested in investing in or indeed, acquiring the shareholding in the national airline.
The initial privatisation of Air Malawi had begun in 2002. However, these efforts were unsuccessful and the Government adopted a passive privatisation approach. The focus since 2003 has been to shore up the value of the airline and also to attend to any serious enquiries from prospective investors. Following the Government’s directive, The PC has engaged COMAIR in discussions. COMAIR has since submitted a proposal that is under discussion with the relevant Government institutions. During this time, any serious inquiries and expressions of interest in Air Malawi will be considered by the Government.
