The Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Water and Irrigation Development, in close collaboration with other key stakeholders is undertaking water sector restructuring with the aim of ensuring equitable access to and use of water resources amongst the various users and players, and also ensuring that reforms in the water supply and sanitation services provide for equitable access by all Malawians.
The Project under which the reforms are being implemented has the following broad objectives: - Development of a National Water Policy that covers all areas under water resource management and development
- Development of a related Water Act in line with the Policy
- Strengthening of the Water Resources Authority to ensure equitable distribution of the resources amongst the various users
- Establishing a water utility regulator to ensure fair play in the water supply sub sector
- The restructuring or re-engineering of the urban water boards to make them self supporting.
The Privatisation Commission is actively involved in the reforms with a major focus on the urban water supply. Currently there are a number of studies that are taking place to inform Government on how to achieve the set objectives. |
